Kindergartners participated in the annual Art in the Park last month at Southside Park in Carroll. Kuemper Catholic School art teachers Sarah Davis (K-8) and Jodi Steinbach (high school) introduced Art in the Park 10 years ago to give students an opportunity to further exercise their creativity. Classes are now offered to kindergartners through sixth graders in different age groups: Kindergarten, first grade, second and third grades, and fourth through sixth grades. Classes met four days in two-hour sessions, practicing various types of art and studying art greats including Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, Paul Cezanne, and Iowan fiber artist Nancy Polster. Each student took home four projects they completed during the week. Above, Makena Pudenz, daughter of Shelby Pudenz, paints line and patterned details to her terra cotta planter. Students used a monochromatic color scheme to paint a darker color for their background and a lighter color for their patterns. Each student took home petunias they planted. The flowers were provided by Phocas Gardents of Sac City.

Kindergartener Remi Smaldone, daughter of Andrew and Ema Smaldone, paints shapes different colors as students work on concepts like balance and repetition in their artwork. This hanging canvas project was finished by adding lines via Sharpies and other textures such as pompoms. Students studied Iowa artist Nancy Polster, who was a textile and fiber-art artist as well as an educator at Iowa State University.

Kindergartner Reese Riedell, daughter of Molly Riedell, paints shapes different colors as students work on concepts like balance and repetition in their artwork. This hanging canvas project was finished by adding lines via sharpies and other textures such as pompoms. Students studied Iowa artist Nancy Polster, who was a textile and fiber-art artist as well as an educator at Iowa State University.

Kindergartner Hakeem Riesberg, son of Kyle and Amanda Riesberg, uses a stamp to add texture and pattern to his painted canvas. Students worked on adding different textures and colors and making a pattern out of those for the background of their finished self-portrait canvas piece.

Kindergartner Lauren Pudenz,  daughter of Calvin and Malissa Pudenz, uses a stamp to add texture and pattern to her painted canvas. Students worked on adding different textures and colors and making a pattern out of those for the background of their finished self-portrait canvas piece.
